Operating model

How does an Arthur Murray Dance Studio operate after opening?

Direct answer

The franchisee runs a full-time, on-premises dance-instruction Studio that converts local inquiries into written student enrollments and Dance Packages, then fulfills them through private lessons, group classes, practice parties and authorized events. Arthur Murray International, Inc. controls the teaching method, enrollment rules, reporting, advertising approvals, technology standards and territorial boundaries.

The FDD does not disclose a separate mobile, home-based, kiosk or nontraditional service format. Additional Studios, released-Market-Area arrangements and the Franchise Development Program change development, support or royalty relationships, but the customer-facing unit remains a Studio. The official conversion page markets conversion of an existing dance studio; the FDD does not define conversion as a separate operating format.

Offering and demand

What does the Studio sell, and who buys it?

The Studio sells dance instruction and related activities to the general public, principally through Dance Packages. The consumer-facing system targets beginners, singles, couples, wedding clients, social dancers and competitive dancers; the contractual revenue base also includes parties, competitions, trips, clubs, memberships and related Studio services.

Core instruction

The Arthur Murray Method and System combines personalized private lessons, group classes for repetition and partner practice, and practice parties for social application. The Medalist System supplies a structured progression through introductory, Bronze, Silver and Gold programs.

Special-purpose demand

The official consumer site markets introductory lessons, wedding-dance programs and a broad catalog of ballroom, smooth, Latin, rhythm, social, party and specialty dances. Authorized Dance-O-Rama and similar events extend the student relationship beyond ordinary lessons.

Dance Package
A package of dance-instruction lessons sold to a student. The 2026 FDD counts each package once regardless of lesson count; packages may be prepaid in full or partly prepaid with periodic balance payments.
Gross Receipts
All money received for instruction, lessons, services, parties, competitions, trips, club memberships and related Studio activities. This is a reporting definition, not an owner-earnings measure.

Basis: 2026 FDD, Items 1, 6, 16 and 19, pp. 2, 7, 32 and 42-43. Official service pages: introductory lesson journey, dances taught, wedding-dance lessons and official events.

Service cycle

How does work move through the Studio?

The operating cycle begins with approved local and brand marketing, moves through an introductory appointment and written enrollment, and then becomes a recurring scheduling, teaching, recordkeeping and reporting process. Student obligations remain attached to unused paid lessons, including when a student visits another Arthur Murray Dance Studio.

People and accountability

Who performs each operating function?

This is not disclosed as an absentee model. The franchisee must devote full time, attention and best efforts and keep the Studio under direct, on-premises control and full-time supervision. Additional Studios may use an approved on-premises manager, but the franchisee remains responsible for employees, records, student obligations and brand compliance.

Owner participation

The 2026 FDD requires full-time, direct, on-premises supervision. A manager may supervise each additional Studio and need not hold equity, but must be acceptable to Arthur Murray International, Inc. and sign confidentiality and noncompetition provisions. All trainees, instructors, supervisors, managers and sales personnel require written employment agreements protecting proprietary information.

Basis: 2026 FDD, Item 15, pp. 31-32; Franchise Agreement §§2(i), 10(g), 10(k)-10(m) and 12, pp. 3, 9-13. Official supplemental context: training and support.

Inputs and systems

Which technology, facilities and suppliers are mandatory?

The supply chain is light, but the operating system is controlled. The Studio must use the prescribed teaching materials, approved physical standards, specified records and required technology. The 2026 FDD says Agenda Master Software is expected to become mandatory during 2026; DXP and centralized digital advertising were optional at issuance but could become mandatory after written notice.

Input Classification Operating function Franchisee obligation
Agenda Master Software Franchisor-licensed point-of-sale system Studio transactions and required reporting Acquire license and approved hardware when required
Digital Experience Platform (DXP) Optional at FDD issuance; future mandate reserved Website, CRM, leads, content, reporting, data and Agenda Master access Join after required written notice; verify current status

Studio premises Brand-specified asset Instruction and student experience Use oak, maple or approved flooring; maintain high-quality music and furnishings
Insurance and payments Standards-based third parties Risk control and transaction processing Maintain required coverage; support specified electronic payments and PCI-DSS if required
Technology requirement

Arthur Murray International, Inc. reserves independent access to electronically collected data without a contractual access limit, may change computer specifications and can require upgrades. Agenda Master access is location-specific and may be suspended under the Terms of Use; the franchisee remains responsible for users, passwords, equipment, internet access and third-party product terms.

Basis: 2026 FDD, Items 8 and 11, pp. 16-17 and 23; Franchise Agreement §10(r)-10(s), pp. 10-11; Agenda Master - Terms of Use §§1-3 and 12. The FDD does not disclose a broad required-product purchasing program beyond the identified proprietary materials, technology, insurance and specifications.

Control allocation

What does the franchisor control, and what remains with the franchisee?

Arthur Murray International, Inc. controls the branded method, approved offering, enrollment safeguards, advertising, territory, technology standards and audit rights. The franchisee directs day-to-day local execution within those rules, including hiring, scheduling, local relationships and expense management. The FDD states that the franchisor has no obligation to assist in setting minimum or maximum prices.

Teaching and qualityThe franchisor may change dance steps, programs, testing, charting, recording and operating manuals. Full-standard medal examinations require a certified examiner.
Products and eventsThe Studio must offer required products and services, may not add unauthorized offerings, and needs consent for non-sponsored competitions or out-of-area activity.
Student contractsEnrollment forms require approved wording, expiration and cancellation terms, unused-lesson limits, owner identification and franchised-Studio disclosure.
MarketingUnapproved advertising is prohibited. The franchisee executes local marketing and must participate in applicable cooperatives and required sponsored promotions.
Records and auditsThe franchisor specifies reports, can inspect books and bank records during business hours, and can request enrollment agreements, lesson cards, receipts and tax records.
Local managementThe franchisee hires and supervises the team, maintains the premises, sets schedules within required customary hours, handles refunds and remains liable for student obligations.

Basis: 2026 FDD, Items 8, 11, 15 and 16, pp. 16-17, 20-23 and 31-32; Franchise Agreement §§7, 9-13, pp. 5-14.

Territory and channels

Can the franchisee sell anywhere or through any channel?

No. A Studio does not automatically receive an exclusive area. Arthur Murray International, Inc. may designate a protected Market Area when a market supports multiple Studios, but the franchisee must operate exclusively within that Market Area or another specified area and needs written consent for outside activity, including competitions and alternative-distribution sales.

Territory limit

A granted Market Area protects against another Arthur Murray Dance Studio while the franchisee meets development and agreement obligations. That protection can end after uncured default or missed Studio-development requirements. The franchisor and affiliates reserve Internet, catalog, telemarketing and other alternative-distribution rights without compensation, while the franchisee needs consent to use those channels inside or outside the Market Area.

The location and any relocation require approval. A Market Area is not the same as an unrestricted customer territory: it governs where the Studio may conduct business and where additional Arthur Murray Studios may be placed, while the Franchise Agreement separately controls online solicitation, visiting students, events and cross-Studio teaching obligations.

Basis: 2026 FDD, Item 12, pp. 25-27; Franchise Agreement §2(c)-2(i), pp. 2-4. The official franchise site describes available U.S. markets, but the signed Franchise Agreement controls the actual boundaries and protection.

System footprint

What does Item 20 show about the operating network?

Item 20 shows a fully franchised domestic operating network at year-end 2025. Franchised outlets rose from 230 at year-end 2023 to 237 in 2024 and 240 in 2025, while company-owned outlets remained at zero in all three years.

Interpretation: customer fulfillment sits entirely in franchised Studios, and the FDD discloses no company-owned domestic outlet population for operating comparison.

During 2025, four franchised Studios opened, one terminated and none ceased operations for other reasons, producing a net increase of three. Item 20 also listed 20 signed-but-not-opened agreements and 20 projected new franchised outlets for the next fiscal year, with no projected company-owned outlets.

Buyer verification

Which operating questions still require document-level confirmation?

The 2026 FDD defines the core model, but several 2026 technology and territory conditions depend on later notices or the completed Franchise Agreement. A buyer should verify the current operating configuration rather than assume the issuance-date status remains unchanged.

Technology status: Has Agenda Master Software, DXP, the website license or centralized digital advertising become mandatory, and which integrations and hardware are currently required?
Territory document: Is a Market Area granted, what are its precise boundaries, how many Studios must be developed and what events terminate protection?
Staffing practice: Which roles does the franchisor expect at launch and maturity beyond the disclosed full-time receptionist, manager and qualified-instructor requirements?
Enrollment controls: What current limits apply to unused lessons and dollar value, and which state-specific cancellation, bonding or consumer-protection provisions modify the standard form?
Local demand system: Which cooperative, approved agency, lead-routing process and official website configuration apply to the proposed Studio location?

Verification basis: 2026 FDD, Items 8, 11 and 12; Franchise Agreement §§2, 9-12; Agenda Master - Terms of Use. The official franchise FAQ provides current public context but does not replace the signed agreements.
