Operating-model answer

A Discovery Map franchise is a local advertising-publishing business. The franchisee sells print and approved digital placements, supplies advertiser data, manages billing and local distribution, and renews the map annually. Discovery Map International, Inc. controls brand standards, territory rules, production, technology, approved suppliers and digital channels.

Data basis: Discovery Map International, Inc., a Vermont corporation, is the legal franchisor. Offering and demand

What does a Discovery Map franchise sell, and who buys it?

The paying customer is generally a local advertiser; the primary user is the traveler or local resident who receives the printed map free or uses the destination page, WebMap and Discovery Map App.

The core offering is advertising associated with an illustrated tourist and visitor information map. Advertisers include restaurants, resorts, lodging businesses, retailers, attractions and other tourism-oriented merchants in the Area of Exclusive Rights. The consumer FAQ directs advertisers to the local publisher; the official business-model page identifies ad sales and map distribution as the central duties.

Each print advertiser receives a corresponding destination-page listing. Website advertising may be sold only through the Web Ad Sales Program, and the franchisee must enroll merchants in the Discovery Map App. Official pages describe destination-page advertising and app-based local offers and discovery.

Evidence: 2025 FDD, Item 1, pp. 8–9; Item 11, pp. 21–22; Item 16, p. 29; Franchise Agreement §§7D, 7L, 15O and 19I, pp. 79–81, 88–89 and 93.

Service cycle

How does work move from a local prospect to a published map?

Production dependency

The franchisor is the only approved supplier of map layout and map assembly services. The franchisee controls local advertiser relationships and distribution, but cannot independently substitute the core publication workflow.

Evidence: 2025 FDD, Items 6, 8 and 11, pp. 10–16 and 19–23; Franchise Agreement §§6B, 9D–I and 15C, 15I, 15K–O, pp. 76–83 and 87–89. The official support page confirms the local sales, distribution and franchisor-production split.

Responsibility map

Who performs each operating function?

The franchisee is the local publisher and independent operator. The franchisor controls the publication system and brand standards, while approved vendors supply printing, racks and other operating inputs under FDD rules.

Franchisee

  • Prospects, sells and services local advertisers.
  • Records sales and advertiser data when transactions occur.
  • Uses required billing, reporting and production systems.
  • Manages print inventory and local map distribution.
  • Maintains licenses, insurance, books, staff and contractors.

Discovery Map International

  • Defines the Area and protects it against another Discovery Map franchise.
  • Provides Operations Manual standards and system training.
  • Supplies map development, artwork, layout and assembly.
  • Hosts the central website, destination page and approved digital programs.
  • Approves advertising, suppliers, managers, map standards and final production.

Affiliates and vendors

  • Discovery Digital Services, Inc. supplies the Discovery Map Publication System.
  • Approved printers produce maps under system specifications.
  • Approved or designated suppliers provide racks, labels and production services.
  • The franchisee selects general computer and broadband vendors within technical requirements.
  • Employees or contractors remain under franchisee control and expense.
Owner participation

Personal operation is recommended, not required. The franchisee must devote best efforts; when the franchisee is not personally managing, a franchisor-approved, fully trained general manager must operate the Franchised Business. The FDD does not prescribe a unit headcount or staffing ratio.

Evidence: 2025 FDD, Item 15, pp. 28–29; Franchise Agreement §§7H–K, 14A and 15N, pp. 80–81 and 85–88. The official franchise FAQ also describes the owner’s primary work as selling ads and managing distribution, while the franchisor supplies design resources.

Technology and inputs

Which systems and suppliers are mandatory?

The model is supplier-light in office hardware but tightly controlled in publication, data capture, payment processing, digital advertising and print production. General hardware sourcing is flexible; the required publication stack and digital sales path are not.

Discovery Map Publication SystemRequired program supplied through Discovery Digital Services, Inc.; includes AdWiz, Website Ads and the Discovery Map App operating path.
AdWizRequired browser-based system for sharing advertiser and Area information with the franchisor and moving content into production.
Online billing and card processingRequired for map advertising credit-card payments; the franchisee bears processing charges and remains responsible for collections and reporting.
Approved production suppliersThe franchisor is sole approved supplier for map layout and assembly. Approved printers, racks and labels must meet specifications; approved print vendors may pay the franchisor a small commission.
Computer and connectivityVendor choice remains open, but the unit needs a supported operating system, designated current browser, full-color printer and qualifying broadband connection.
Discovery Map App enrollmentThe franchisee must enroll merchants in its Area. If fewer than ten are enrolled within three months after print publication, the franchisor may enroll merchants directly.

The franchisor may require hardware, software or connectivity upgrades and designate new e-commerce products. It does not claim remote access to the franchisee’s general computer data, but AdWiz transmits advertiser and Area information. Alternative suppliers may be proposed; the franchisor may inspect, test or revoke approval.

Evidence: 2025 FDD, Items 6, 8 and 11, pp. 11–16 and 23; Franchise Agreement §§7G, 7L, 9E and 15O, pp. 79–83 and 88–89; official Discovery Map App FAQ.

Decision rights

What does the franchisor control, and what remains with the franchisee?

The franchisor controls the operating envelope; the franchisee makes day-to-day decisions inside it and bears responsibility for local execution. Brand, channel, supplier, reporting and quality decisions remain reserved to the franchisor.

Franchisor controlsApproved goods and services, map appearance, minimum print quantities, production specifications, electronic media, websites, digital sales programs, supplier approval, manager approval, advertiser-data method and inspection rights.
Franchisee decidesDaily prospecting schedule, relationship management, local sales activity, staffing beyond the required management rules, home office versus an office inside the Area, and selection of non-designated computer, broadband and general vendors that satisfy specifications.
Pricing boundaryThe local publisher quotes advertisers, and the public FAQ says pricing varies by location. However, the franchisor publishes standard rates for comparable markets; below-standard rates require consent and may still be counted at the standard rate for Gross Sales reporting.
Marketing boundaryThe franchisee may create local materials, but franchisor approval is required before use. Local advertising is generally restricted to the Area, except approved cooperative activity or media spanning multiple Areas.
Audit boundaryThe franchisee keeps complete books for at least seven years, submits monthly and annual reports, and permits the franchisor to inspect operations, contact advertisers and audit records.

Evidence: 2025 FDD, Items 8, 11, 12, 15 and 16, pp. 14–29; Franchise Agreement §§7, 15, 18 and 19, pp. 78–93.

Territory and channels

How does the Area of Exclusive Rights limit customer acquisition?

The Area blocks another Discovery Map franchise from being granted there, but it is not exclusive against every franchisor channel, national account or direct sale. The protection is geographic, conditional and channel-limited.

The franchisee may not solicit advertisers outside the Area or use independent internet, catalog, telemarketing or other alternative channels for sales. It may accept inbound business from an unassigned outside Area. The franchisor reserves alternative channels and may solicit inside the Area under specified conditions without compensation.

The franchisor retains regional and national accounts, sets their terms and prices, may require local participation, and may service them. Area continuation depends on compliance, market penetration, annual map publication and minimum sales-performance standards; those thresholds are operating conditions, not an earnings forecast.

Territory limit

An Area of Exclusive Rights protects against another Discovery Map franchise, not all advertisers, internet activity or brand-controlled accounts inside the geography.

Evidence: 2025 FDD, Item 12, pp. 24–26; Franchise Agreement §3, pp. 74–75, and §19F–I, pp. 92–93. The official territory evaluation page emphasizes tourism research, local business interest and distribution planning.

System footprint

What does Item 20 show about the operating network?

The U.S.-focused system ended fiscal 2025 with 116 franchised outlets and no affiliate-owned outlets, after ending 2024 with 119 franchised outlets. Item 20 therefore reports a fully franchised year-end network.

Interpretation: the reported network was entirely franchised at fiscal year-end 2025; the franchised count decreased by three from fiscal 2024.

Buyer verification

Which operating questions remain material before signing?

The FDD establishes the contractual structure, but execution details remain in the confidential Operations Manual, current supplier list and territory production plan. Those materials determine current deadlines, specifications, assignments and performance checks.

  • Map production: verify approved print quantity, map size, production calendar and current printer for the proposed Area.
  • Digital scope: confirm merchant-enrollment duties, App listing terms, Website Ads inventory and mandatory versus optional programs.
  • Sales control: obtain current rate guidance, discount approval, Advertising Order Form and national-account rules.
  • Distribution: review rack specifications, target locations, replenishment expectations and map-placement monitoring.
  • Management: confirm training designees, the general-manager approval standard and how owner “best efforts” apply.
  • Territory: map reserved channels, uncovered Area sections, national accounts and consequences of missing performance standards.
Final synthesis

What is the central operating reality?

Discovery Map converts local merchant advertising into a free printed and digital destination guide, with the franchisee responsible for the local sales-and-distribution engine. The annual cycle also carries production data and compliance reporting.

The franchisee’s most important responsibility is sustaining the advertiser pipeline, converting orders into accurate production data and keeping maps distributed. The strongest dependency is the franchisor’s control of layout, assembly, brand standards, approved suppliers, digital channels and final publication.

The Area of Exclusive Rights protects against another Discovery Map franchise, not every franchisor channel or national account. The largest undisclosed question is territory-specific Operations Manual detail: sales-cycle deadlines, print and distribution standards, supplier assignments and performance monitoring.
