Opening timeline
How long does it take to open a Surface Experts franchise?
Official FDD typical timelineThe 2026 FDD states that the typical period from signing the Franchise Agreement to opening a Surface Experts Business is six to nine weeks. This is an estimate, not the contractual opening deadline. Financing, permits and licenses, initial training scheduling, and employee hiring can extend the process, and the franchisee still must obtain written approval to open.
Calendar days before signing or payment to the franchisor or affiliate.
Minimum ownership when the franchisee operates through an entity.
Principal Executive must devote full-time efforts for at least this period.
Current FDD schedule; held in Spokane, Washington.
Plus 10 hours of virtual technician training on request.
Data basis. Legal franchisor: Surface Experts Franchising LLC. FDD issued April 6, 2026. Format: mobile, typically home-based or small-office, under one Franchise Agreement and defined Territory; existing franchisees may add adjacent territory through the Contiguous Territory Addendum. Timeline mode: official total timeline. Evidence: 2026 FDD Items 1, 5–12, 15–17 and 20; Franchise Agreement §§ 2.4, 5.4 and 6.1–6.6. Checked July 18, 2026.
The official franchise overview says “6–8 weeks” from franchise award; the 2026 FDD says six to nine weeks from signing. Because the start events differ, treat them as separate statements rather than one promised deadline.
Confirm when “franchise award” occurs, the Opening Deadline that will appear on the Summary Page, and how your training class, staffing, financing and local licensing fit the six-to-nine-week FDD estimate.
Qualification
What must a prospective Surface Experts franchisee qualify for before signing?
The 2026 FDD does not publish a universal net-worth, liquid-capital, credit-score, education or industry-experience minimum. The disclosed hard owner gate is the Principal Executive: primary decision-maker, full-time operator, at least 50% owner when the franchisee is an entity, trained by the franchisor, and committed full time for at least three years.
If the franchisee is an entity, every owner signs the Guaranty and Non-Compete Agreement. The business must also launch with a trained Lead Technician and sales/business-development coverage. Franchisor financing, if offered, is discretionary, depends on funds and creditworthiness, and requires personal guaranties from entity owners.

Verified sequence
What is the opening process from inquiry to written approval to open?

Critical path
Which disclosed pre-opening periods can drive the launch schedule?
These periods are not additive because they use different triggers and may overlap. Schedule them backward from the intended opening and training dates.
Each bar has its own trigger; values are not summed.
Interpretation: the 30-day notice sits inside a launch plan that also depends on training, staffing, permits and technology.
Source: 2026 FDD Item 5 p. 6 and Item 11 pp. 19, 23–24; Franchise Agreement §§ 5.4(a), 6.3 and 6.5. The 42–63 day range converts six to nine weeks at seven days per week.
Territory and location
Does Surface Experts require site approval or a commercial buildout?
No standard storefront approval process is disclosed. Surface Experts is primarily mobile and typically home-based. The franchisee selects the location; the primary office must be inside the Territory; the FDD says the franchisor does not approve the site or area and has no site-approval timeframe.
A customer-facing location must meet System Standards, but the franchisor does not undertake to locate or negotiate space, obtain permits, bring premises into code compliance, or perform construction. A home-based franchisee may later be required to obtain a professional office on 60 days’ notice.
The Territory is defined in the Franchise Agreement. Expansion is not automatic: an existing franchisee must satisfy then-current criteria, remain compliant, demonstrate multi-territory capability, obtain franchisor agreement and sign the Contiguous Territory Addendum.
No Development Agreement or Area Development Agreement is disclosed for a new buyer. The Contiguous Territory Addendum is an expansion amendment for an existing franchisee, not a multi-unit development schedule.

Responsibility
Who controls each dependency before opening?
Responsibility is split: the franchisor supplies the system, training, specified launch items and opening approval; the franchisee owns staffing, location, financing, permits, insurance and readiness. Third parties can therefore delay launch.
Primary task owner; franchisor assistance does not transfer responsibility.
Applicant
Provides candidate information, reviews disclosure and agreements, evaluates the Territory and decides whether to sign.
Franchisee
Funds setup, hires staff, selects location, secures vehicle/systems, obtains insurance and permits, completes onboarding and gives notice.
Franchisor
Provides launch packages and standards, conducts training, advises on market introduction and gives written opening approval.
Third parties
Lenders, insurers, vendors, landlords and government authorities control financing, coverage, delivery, premises and local authorizations.
Interpretation: financing, permits, hiring and delivery can affect the FDD’s typical timeline without being franchisor guarantees.

Training and staffing
Who must be trained and employed before the business can open?
The Principal Executive and Lead Technician must complete their programs to the franchisor’s satisfaction at least one week before opening; the Lead Technician attends at the same time as the Principal Executive. The Salesperson must complete sales training before opening.
Principal Executive
Role: Full-time primary decision-maker.
Training: 36 classroom hours.
Ownership: At least 50% if the franchisee is an entity.
Lead Technician
Role: Full-time trained technical employee.
Training: 36 classroom hours; 10 virtual hours on request.
Timing: Complete at least one week before opening.
Sales / Business Development
Role: Required launch coverage.
Training: Sales training before opening; Item 11 says the sales/development person attends Spokane training.
Verify: Exact modules and hours.
General manager, if different
Role: May manage day to day, without replacing the Principal Executive’s participation duty.
Training: Item 15 requires successful completion.
Equity: None required for a hired manager.
The FDD describes a full-time Business Development person, while Franchise Agreement § 7.5(b) says at least three-quarters time. Confirm the launch and ongoing standard that will govern the signed agreement.

Opening authorization
What must be complete before Surface Experts gives written approval to open?
Written approval is a separate gate from training completion, staffing or local permits. Before opening, the Franchise Agreement requires the franchisee to be in compliance with the agreement, hold all applicable governmental permits and authorizations, conform to System Standards, have sufficient employees, complete required pre-opening training, and receive written approval from Surface Experts Franchising LLC.
Item 1 says some jurisdictions may require a general-contractor license, handyman license or other permits; it does not create a nationwide list. Verify the actual Territory with relevant state and local authorities.
Source: 2026 FDD Items 1, 8 and 11; Franchise Agreement §§ 6.5 and 7.2. The FTC’s FDD guidance explains why attached agreements matter.
Contract deadlines
Which unresolved deadlines should a buyer verify before signing?
The key unresolved date is the Opening Deadline on the Franchise Agreement Summary Page, which is blank in the form FDD. The business must open by that date; the six-to-nine-week figure is only a typical duration.
Also verify state-specific sales status. Exhibit K is a dated snapshot and listed several registration states as pending when the FDD was issued, so current state effectiveness must be confirmed before relying on availability.
Federal disclosure timing: the FTC Franchise Rule requires at least 14 calendar days before signing or payment. A unilateral material change to attached agreements can trigger a separate seven-calendar-day review period under 16 CFR 436.2, subject to the rule’s exception for prospect-initiated negotiated changes. State law may add requirements.
Bottom line
What is the practical opening path for a Surface Experts franchise?
The verified path is candidate review, current FDD review, Territory and agreement execution, onboarding, required purchases, staffing, systems, insurance and permits, training, opening notice, satisfaction of opening conditions, written approval, then opening by the Summary Page deadline.
The total timeline is the FDD’s typical six-to-nine-week estimate from signing to opening, not a guarantee. The main franchisee-controlled dependency is team readiness plus permits and setup; the main external dependency is training/approval coordination and third-party timing. Verify the actual Opening Deadline and current state effectiveness before signing.
