Opening path

How does the JFE Sushi Box Snow Fox opening process work?

Milestone-only
No complete expected timeline is disclosed

The 2025 JFE Franchising FDD does not provide one end-to-end expected opening duration. It does impose a hard condition after signing: the Snowfox Unit must open within two months after the Franchise Agreement Effective Date, or by an earlier date requested by the Store Owner, after all pre-opening duties and JFE's prior written approval. Site timing remains unresolved because JFE states no time limit for selecting or approving a Store location.

Legal franchisor: JFE Franchising, Inc., a Texas corporation.

FDD basis: Issued July 14, 2025; checked July 17, 2026.

Formats covered: New Inline, Endcap, or Island sushi bar; purchase of an existing unit; satellite location for an existing franchisee.

Evidence mode: Milestone-only roadmap using Items 1 and 5-12, Items 15-17 and 20, the Franchise Agreement, Initial Training Agreement, Satellite Unit Addendum, and Purchase Agreement.

Public context: See the official SNOWFOX franchise requirements, the official franchise FAQ, and Wonderfield's franchise overview. Contractual statements below follow the 2025 FDD and its agreements.

14 Calendar days Minimum FDD review period before a binding agreement or payment.
20 Training hours One-week initial program for required trainees.
2 months Opening condition Measured from the Effective Date, unless the Store Owner requires earlier.
No limit Site-selection period The FDD states no deadline for JFE to select or approve a location.

Qualification

What must an applicant qualify for before JFE will award a unit?

JFE separates application screening from franchise award. Its official franchise page asks for proof of legal eligibility to work in the United States, spoken and written English proficiency, three recent months of bank statements, and successful drug, background, and credit checks. The FDD additionally permits drug, criminal-background, and tuberculosis testing and requires results acceptable to JFE.

Meeting those screening conditions does not obligate JFE to grant a franchise. The Initial Training Agreement says satisfactory training is a prerequisite, but signing that agreement and attending the course do not by themselves require JFE to award a Snowfox Unit.

  • Work eligibility: Prepare evidence that the applicant can lawfully work in the United States.
  • Financial screening: Supply the requested bank statements and authorize the disclosed credit review.
  • Personal screening: Complete the requested drug, background, and any tuberculosis testing.
  • Training availability: Be able to attend the one-week program in Houston or another designated location at the scheduled time.
  • Operating entity: Plan to operate through a corporation or limited liability company rather than as an individual.
  • Active operator: Identify a majority-owner Acting Principal who will train, remain actively involved, and bind the entity.

Verified sequence

What sequence leads from application to opening?

The process has eight stages. Its length depends on an untimed Store-location decision and third-party work.

1
Submit the official application

Action: Provide identity, work-eligibility, English, financial, and background-screening information.

Actor: Applicant.

Blocker: Missing records or an unacceptable screening result can stop qualification.

2
Receive and review the FDD

Action: Review all Items, state addenda, and applicable agreements before paying or signing.

Timing: At least 14 calendar days before a binding agreement or payment to JFE or an affiliate.

Next: Resolve state-specific changes and agreement questions.

3
Complete screening and the training agreement

Action: Complete requested checks, sign the Initial Training Agreement, and pay the per-person training charge before the course.

Actor: Applicant and required trainees.

Blocker: The training payment is nonrefundable, and the agreement does not guarantee a franchise award.

4
Pass the 20-hour initial program

Action: Complete sushi preparation, sanitation, safety, administration, evaluation, and certification-related training to JFE's satisfaction.

Timing: One week; Item 11 also states completion within four weeks after Franchise Agreement signing and at least one week before opening.

Blocker: An unsatisfactory trainee or manager must be replaced or retrained.

5
Obtain the applicable Store location

Action: JFE selects the specific supermarket or other third-party Store location after satisfactory training.

Actor: JFE, subject to its Store Agreement and Store Owner availability.

Timing: No disclosed selection or approval deadline.

6
Form the entity and sign the correct documents

Action: Execute the Franchise Agreement through the operating entity; owners sign the guaranty. An existing-unit buyer also signs the Purchase Agreement; a qualifying existing franchisee uses the Satellite Unit Addendum.

Next: Verify the Location, Effective Date, Store Owner opening date, and applicable exhibits before execution.

7
Complete pre-opening readiness

Action: Obtain permits and food-manager credentials, arrange required insurance, use approved suppliers, install approved equipment and signs, hire trained staff, and secure opening inventory.

Actor: Franchisee, while the Store Owner controls Store buildout and layout.

Blocker: Permits, Store work, supplier delivery, insurance evidence, or staff certification can delay approval.

8
Obtain written approval and open

Action: Demonstrate full compliance and obtain JFE's prior written opening approval.

Timing: Open within two months after the Effective Date or by the earlier Store Owner date.

Blocker: Opening without completed obligations or approval is not permitted; missing the deadline is a default.

Contractual deadline

The two-month period is a default trigger, not an expected construction or launch estimate. It begins on the Franchise Agreement Effective Date, while JFE discloses no time limit for selecting the Store location. A buyer should therefore verify that the specific Location and any earlier Store Owner date are settled before signing.

Site and control

Who controls the site, buildout, and opening decision?

JFE controls selection of the specific Location, but it does not grant an exclusive territory. The franchisee does not sign a Store lease. The Store Owner controls buildout, development, specifications, layout, remodeling, and possible relocation within the Store, while JFE controls system approval and the final written authorization to open.

Applicant Completes screening and training
JFE Selects the specific Store location
Store Owner Controls Store buildout and layout
Franchisee Completes permits, equipment, staff, and inventory
JFE Issues prior written opening approval
Site approval is not territory protection

The Franchise Agreement identifies one approved Location and grants no minimum or exclusive territory. JFE may operate or license other channels, and the Store Owner may require remodeling, operational changes, relocation within the Store, or termination under the Store Agreement. If Store rights are lost without the franchisee's fault, JFE may make reasonable relocation efforts in its discretion, but relocation is not guaranteed.

Training and readiness

What must training, staffing, and pre-opening readiness cover?

The required initial program totals 20 hours over one week. The corporation's or limited liability company's principals, proposed manager, and employees who prepare or handle food must complete the training JFE assigns to them. The Acting Principal must hold majority ownership, complete training, remain actively involved, and ensure full-time day-to-day supervision by either the Acting Principal or a trained full-time manager.

Before opening, the franchisee must obtain applicable business and health approvals, Food Manager certification, required Food Handler training, workers' compensation and employer-liability coverage, and evidence of other required insurance. Equipment, labels, uniforms, signage, display items, food, ingredients, and opening inventory must come from JFE or designated or approved suppliers.

JFE may assist with permits, but the franchisee remains solely responsible. JFE can require refresher, remedial, or supplemental training. At the franchisee's request, JFE will provide a total of one opening-assistance day at its cost; missed scheduling or extra days can create charges under the agreement.

Buyer verification

The Initial Training Agreement treats satisfactory training as a prerequisite that does not obligate JFE to award a franchise. Item 11 separately states that training must be completed within four weeks after Franchise Agreement signing and at least one week before opening. Ask JFE to confirm in writing whether the applicant's course will occur before signing, immediately after signing, or in two stages for the specific transaction.

The federal Form I-9 requirement and general E-Verify distinction are summarized by E-Verify's official employee-verification guidance; the Franchise Agreement independently requires use of E-Verify before hiring.

Format differences

How do the new-unit, existing-unit, and satellite paths differ?

The FDD covers three transaction paths with different documents and opening dependencies.

New unit

Inline, Endcap, or Island

JFE selects a Store location and the operating entity signs a Franchise Agreement. The Store Owner controls the Store buildout; the franchisee completes equipment, permits, staffing, inventory, training, and JFE opening approval.

Existing unit

Purchase and simultaneous franchise grant

The buyer signs a Purchase Agreement and Franchise Agreement, inspects the assets, accepts disclosed assets on an as-is, where-is basis, and satisfies the written closing conditions. The closing date belongs in the Purchase Agreement.

Satellite

Only for an existing franchisee

Products are prepared at the existing Snowfox Unit and sold from a self-service station under a Satellite Unit Addendum. The franchisee uses an approved NSF carrier, stocks and inspects the station daily, and carries the required vehicle coverage. JFE may terminate the addendum on seven days' notice.

Due diligence

What should the buyer verify before signing or opening?

These checks convert blank dates, discretionary approvals, and third-party dependencies into written transaction facts. They do not replace review by qualified professionals.

  • Exact format: Confirm whether the transaction is a new Inline, Endcap, or Island bar, an acquisition, or a satellite addendum.
  • Location exhibit: Verify the specific Store address, the Store Owner's requested opening date, and whether either field is still blank.
  • Training sequence: Obtain written confirmation of when training occurs relative to Franchise Agreement execution and award.
  • Store work: Identify which fixtures, utilities, layout work, installation, and inspection tasks belong to the Store Owner.
  • Local approvals: Confirm the actual city, county, and state licenses, health permits, food-manager credentials, and inspection lead times.
  • Approved supply chain: Confirm lead times for equipment, labels, signs, uniforms, ingredients, and opening inventory.
  • Insurance evidence: Confirm workers' compensation, employer liability, additional-insured terms, and satellite automobile coverage where applicable.
  • System interviews: Use Item 20 contacts to ask current and former franchisees about site waits, Store Owner coordination, training, opening approval, and relocations.

Opening conclusion

What is the practical opening conclusion?

The verified path is application and screening, FDD review, training documentation and satisfactory completion, JFE Store-location selection, entity and transaction-document execution, Store Owner buildout, franchisee readiness work, and JFE's written opening approval. The total timeline is undisclosed, not an official estimate or defensible derived duration.

The key applicant-controlled dependency is completing training, entity, permits, insurance, approved purchasing, staffing, and food-safety requirements before the agreement deadline. The most important external dependency is JFE and the Store Owner securing and preparing the Location. Before signing, verify the Location exhibit and the earlier of the two opening triggers: two months after the Effective Date or the date requested by the Store Owner.
