How does Wild Birds Unlimited operate after opening?

Direct answer

Under the April 30, 2026 U.S. FDD, Wild Birds Unlimited operates as an advice-led specialty retail Store built around repeat bird-food purchases. The franchisee runs the physical Store and mandatory MyWBU Store; Wild Birds Unlimited, Inc. controls approved merchandise, operating standards, required technology, brand marketing and the protected-but-nonexclusive Designated Territory.

Data basis. Legal franchisor: Wild Birds Unlimited, Inc. Offer: a traditional WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED retail Store, typically 1,200 to 1,700 square feet. Offering and demand

What does the Store sell, and who buys it?

The Store sells approved bird food, bird feeders and nature-related products to retail end users, with specialist advice as part of the customer experience. Authorized services can include FeederScaping consultation and installation, but that service is available only at participating Stores.

Core assortment

Consumables, equipment and gifts

Official categories include seed blends, specialty bird foods, suet, seed cylinders, feeders, pole systems, baffles, bird baths, nest boxes and gifts. The franchisee maintains approved products in sufficient quantity and variety and stops reordering disapproved items.

Customer base

Backyard bird-feeding and bird-watching hobbyists

Item 1 identifies backyard bird-feeding and bird-watching hobbyists and nature-gift buyers. Sales are limited to retail customers, the MyWBU Store and other WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED Stores; resale or wholesale requires prior written permission.

Repeat-customer mechanism

Daily Savings Club participation is mandatory. In the 2025 Item 19 sample, members averaged 50.38% of profiled customers and 79.48% of sales. That mix makes customer identification, loyalty enrollment and accurate profiles operating tasks; it is not an earnings projection.

People and accountability

What does the owner do, and can the Store be manager-run?

The owner may manage the Store or appoint a designated Store Manager. That manager must complete initial training, supervise full-time and avoid conflicting management commitments. The FDD permits this manager-run structure but does not define or endorse absentee ownership.

Franchisee

  • Controls day-to-day Store management and legal compliance.
  • Hires, trains, schedules, pays and discharges Store employees.
  • Owns order accuracy, taxes, customer safety and local fulfillment.
  • Maintains inventory, records, insurance and supplier accounts.

Store Manager

  • Completes the required new-store training program.
  • Personally supervises Store operations on a full-time basis.
  • Fulfills obligations under the Franchise Agreement.
  • Signs the required confidentiality agreement.

Wild Birds Unlimited

  • Assigns a Business Coach for operating and bookkeeping advice.
  • Provides Operating Handbooks, training and approved supplier information.
  • Conducts consultations, inspections and Store evaluations.
  • Does not become the employer of Store personnel.
Owner participation

No employee count, shift pattern or staffing ratio is disclosed. Sources: 2026 FDD, Items 11 and 15, pp. 32-34 and 39-40; Franchise Agreement §§ 6.01, 6.03 and 6.04; training and support.

Inputs, platforms and controls

Which suppliers and systems are mandatory?

Wild Birds Unlimited uses an approved-supplier model with selected single-source categories. ERPLY POS, the MyWBU Store, designated payment processing, approved POS hardware, broadband with failover internet, required back-office software and specified customer programs form the operating stack.

Operating input Required relationship What it controls
Merchandise and bird food Approved Supplier List/Database; bird food, seed and blends only from approved suppliers Assortment quality, private-label products, packaging and replenishment inputs
ERPLY POS Required cloud POS from Point of Sale, Inc.; approved hardware and agreements Sales, customers, inventory, purchasing, promotions, loyalty, billing and reporting
MyWBU Store Mandatory franchisee-specific platform; Wild Birds Unlimited is the software supplier Online merchandising, pickup, delivery, customer orders and approved digital campaigns
Marketing and customer programs Salesforce Marketing Cloud, SaaSy Brands, Sprout Social, Printcomm and Shift4 categories named in Item 8 Email, Store website, social publishing, loyalty/gift-card materials and gift-card processing
Back office and security QuickBooks Online, approved Windows hardware, ThreatDown, Avalara and designated bookkeeping Accounting, tax computation, endpoint security and first-year monthly data review
Technology and supplier control

Wild Birds Unlimited may access Store-system information and require technology upgrades. Where no sole source is designated, the franchisee may propose a compliant supplier or product; Wild Birds Unlimited may test it, revise the Approved Supplier List/Database, revoke approval or stop its use.

Channel rights

How does the Designated Territory protect the Store?

The Designated Territory is protected, not exclusive. While the franchisee is compliant, Wild Birds Unlimited will not place another WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED brick-and-mortar Store inside it, but the protection does not block online sales, other distribution channels, cross-territory customers, advertising spillover or approved onsite services.

Protected inside the Designated Territory

  • No new franchised, company-owned or affiliate-owned brick-and-mortar WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED Store using the Marks while the franchisee is not in default.
  • The approved physical Store location is stated in the Franchise Agreement.
→

Not protected or restricted

  • MyWBU orders from customers inside or outside the Designated Territory.
  • Customers shopping at any physical or online WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED Store.
  • Other franchisees providing approved onsite services in the territory.
  • Wild Birds Unlimited using internet, mail order or other channels.

The franchisee may serve cross-territory customers through the MyWBU Store or approved onsite services. Other internet, catalog or social selling requires approval, and the Marks may be used away from the Store only at an approved temporary site.

Responsibility split

What does the franchisor control, and what remains with the franchisee?

Wild Birds Unlimited controls System standards, approved assortment, required platforms, national marketing and compliance access. The franchisee controls employment, daily execution, local service and generally Store prices, subject to lawful controls and MyWBU minimum-advertised-price rules.

Decision area Wild Birds Unlimited control Franchisee responsibility or discretion
Products and merchandising Approves categories, standards, planograms, private-label sources and disapproved items Selects quantities and executes local merchandising within approved standards
Pricing May recommend prices; may enforce lawful minimum or maximum prices and MyWBU MAP Generally establishes Store prices and maintains accurate posted information
Marketing Controls Advertising Fund, national creative and approval of local materials Funds and places local advertising, submits monthly activity data and executes approved outreach
People Requires a trained full-time Store Manager and System-level service standards Hires, fires, trains, schedules and compensates all Store employees
Records and compliance Prescribes formats, accesses systems, inspects operations and audits records Keeps accurate books, customer data, inventory, tax, insurance and marketing records

The franchisee spends at least 2% of annual Gross Sales on local advertising and submits the Monthly Marketing Activity Report by the 10th. Wild Birds Unlimited controls the Advertising Fund and national or regional campaigns; spending need not benefit a particular Designated Territory.

Due diligence

Which operating details require buyer verification?

Changeable Operating Handbooks, supplier databases and platform rules determine the Store's current day-to-day configuration.

  • Current Operating Handbooks: verify Store Operations, Personnel, Administration, MyWBU Store, Daily Savings Club, FeederScaping and visual-brand requirements.
  • Supplier status: obtain the current Approved Supplier List/Database, sole-source categories, shipping terms and product-discontinuation process.
  • Technology configuration: confirm current ERPLY hardware, payment processor, MyWBU workflow, cyber-security tools, data access and failover-internet specifications.
  • Territory mechanics: review the exact Designated Territory map, neighboring Store locations, online order reach and approved local-delivery practices.
  • Service scope: confirm whether FeederScaping or other onsite services are authorized for the Store and what training, equipment, forms and insurance apply.

Exhibit J lists approximately 685 Operating Handbooks pages, subject to revision. Wild Birds Unlimited may also revise suppliers, technology, customer programs and System standards.

Operating-model synthesis

What is the practical operating conclusion?

Wild Birds Unlimited converts recurring bird-food demand into physical-Store and MyWBU transactions supported by specialist advice and Daily Savings Club customer records.

The franchisee must ensure full-time execution through the Store Manager: staffing, advising customers, maintaining approved inventory, fulfilling orders and keeping compliant records. The strongest dependency is the franchisor-controlled stack of Operating Handbooks, approved suppliers, ERPLY POS, MyWBU Store, customer programs, marketing approvals and data access.

The critical distinction is that the Designated Territory protects the physical Store, not online orders, cross-territory customers or approved onsite services. The largest question to verify is the current Operating Handbooks and Approved Supplier List/Database configuration, including local delivery, single-source categories and labor needed for MyWBU or FeederScaping work.
