How does a Petland franchise operate after opening?
A Petland franchise is a controlled specialty-pet retail operation: the franchisee acquires approved pets and merchandise, staffs animal-care and customer-facing functions, markets locally, fulfills in-store or Authorized E-Commerce sales, records activity through the required POS system, and reports to Petland, Inc. Petland sets Confidential Operating System standards, supplier rules, inventory requirements, technology, brand controls, and inspection rights.

What does the unit sell, and who buys it?
The unit sells pets, pet supplies, authorized pet services, and pet-related items to the general public. It is a physical retail model with System Website lead generation and Authorized E-Commerce only within Petland’s rules.
Item 1 places Petland®, Safari Stan’s Pet Center®, and Dream Tails under the same Franchise Agreement. Dream Tails may focus on dogs and cats and excludes fish and reptiles. Official pages describe Pet Counselors matching pets with customers and providing pet-care education.
Petland®
Full-line Petland® retail format under the Confidential Operating System, with pets, supplies, services, and related merchandise.
Safari Stan’s Pet Center®
Substantially the same operating system and support as Petland®, using a separate brand name.
Dream Tails
Same franchise system, but the FDD permits a limited pet selection focused on dogs and cats, without fish or reptiles.
The FDD contains a format-count discrepancy: Item 1 reports two franchised Safari Stan’s Pet Center® stores at December 31, 2025, while Item 12 says one was operating as of the disclosure date. The current brand-by-brand footprint therefore needs verification.

How does work move through a Petland store?

Who performs each function, and can the store be manager-run?
The franchisee owns employment and day-to-day operation, while Petland controls required training and Confidential Operating System standards. The FDD sets no fixed employee count and does not describe an absentee model.
Item 15 requires personal participation to the extent necessary for compliance. If the franchisee is not actively involved, Petland must be told and the designated manager must complete required training. The Franchise Agreement assigns hiring and training to the franchisee; Petland does not hire, fire, discipline, or control unit employees.
Franchisee / owner
Directs the unit, hires staff, and manages compliance, purchasing, customer service, pricing, cash controls, and reporting.
Designated manager
Must complete required Petland training when the owner is not active; ownership interest is not required.
Pet Counselors / Animal Care Technicians
Official pages identify these unit roles; the FDD mandates no headcount or labor ratio.
Petland’s current qualification page says new franchisees should expect high involvement in store hours for roughly six months to one year until an effective management team can maintain standards. That is official guidance, not a substitute for Item 15 or the Franchise Agreement.
2026 Petland FDD: Item 15, p. 60; Franchise Agreement §10(d), pp. 13–17. See Petland franchise qualification criteria.
Which suppliers, inventory rules, and technology are mandatory?
Petland does not mandate one pet supplier, but it controls source eligibility, merchandise selection, private-label representation, fixtures, uniforms, POS technology, reporting, and data access. The franchisee manages inputs within those rules.
Named systems connect the work: ClubPet and the System Website feed demand, the POS system records sales and inventory, the Confidential Operating System governs execution, and Authorized E-Commerce sites constrain approved online fulfillment.
The franchisee may choose pet sources that are not disapproved, subject to Petland specifications and licensing rules. The franchisee must verify animal suppliers against Petland standards.
The unit must carry 100% of designated Petland® private-label SKUs; the FDD says about 297 in 2025. The agreement also imposes 95%-of-required-level rules for pet selection and merchandise inventory by cost value.
Specified trade fixtures are purchased from Petland as the only approved supplier for those items, while employee uniforms come from a sole strategic supplier under a national contract.
Approved POS hardware, software, and managed services are mandatory. The system tracks revenue, customer counts, department sales, deposits, and inventory; Petland has access and can require upgrades or replacement.
Petland must perform financial reporting for the first 12 months, including monthly financial statements and sales reports. Continuation is generally optional afterward unless another agreement keeps it mandatory.
2026 Petland FDD: Item 8, pp. 23–26; Item 11, pp. 30–46; Franchise Agreement §§10–11, pp. 13–19; §§12–13, p. 19; and §15, pp. 22–25. See Petland franchise resources and Petland breeder standards.
How do customers enter the system, and what territory protection applies?
Demand can come from local advertising, Petland materials, ClubPet, System Websites, approved store websites, cooperatives, and the National Advertising Fund. Territory protects same-system store placement, not all customers or digital channels.
The franchisee deploys required local advertising subject to Petland approval, while Petland controls National Advertising Fund programs. ClubPet participation is mandatory. If the System Website generates a prospect and Petland passes the lead to the unit, the franchisee must contact the prospect and service any resulting account.
Item 12 bars another Petland®, Safari Stan’s Pet Center®, or Dream Tails store inside the Territory while the franchisee remains compliant. Customers may still cross territories, franchisees may solicit outside them, and Petland reserves alternative channels. Authorized e-commerce deliveries are restricted within five miles of another Petland store.
The FDD says the Territory is not exclusive. Protection is against another same-system physical store inside it, not customer crossover, Petland alternative channels, or every competitive brand Petland may control.
2026 Petland FDD: Item 11, pp. 30–46; Item 12, pp. 46–49; Franchise Agreement §2, p. 4, and §14, pp. 19–22.
What does Petland control, and what remains the franchisee’s decision?
Petland controls the operating framework and compliance mechanisms; the franchisee controls employment and local execution. Local discretion exists, but the franchisee remains responsible for the unit.
This separates contractual control from local execution and third-party dependencies.
- Hire, train, schedule, and supervise unit employees.
- Set retail prices for products and services.
- Choose among eligible pet sources and approved suppliers.
- Run local advertising within approval rules.
- Handle day-to-day customer service and complaints.
- Maintain permits, records, cash controls, and local compliance.
- Confidential Operating System standards and revisions.
- Pet, product, inventory, fixture, uniform, and supplier standards.
- Minimum operating hours and required training.
- POS specifications, data access, upgrades, and reporting formats.
- Advertising approval, ClubPet, system web standards, and national-fund programs.
- Inspections, audits, corrective action, and animal-care intervention.
- Approved pet breeders and distributors.
- Approved merchandise and equipment suppliers.
- Sole strategic uniform supplier.
- Approved POS and technology providers.
- Approved store-website vendor when a local site is permitted.
- Veterinary, insurance, landlord, and regulatory relationships required for operation.
The key distinction is responsibility versus discretion: the franchisee remains accountable even where Petland supplies systems, standards, advice, or field support.

What does Item 20 show about the U.S. operating base?
At December 31, 2025, Item 20 reports 86 U.S. outlets: 69 franchised and 17 company-owned. That makes the reported U.S. base 80.2% franchised by outlet count, while the total U.S. outlet count declined by five during 2025.
Exact Item 20 counts; franchised and company-owned outlets reconcile to the 86-outlet U.S. total.
Item 20 shows the franchised count moving from 70 to 69 during 2025 and the company-owned count moving from 21 to 17, producing the five-outlet decline in the reported U.S. total.

Which operating questions still need direct verification?
The FDD is specific about inventory, technology, territory, and control, but several live details remain in the Confidential Operating System or can change. Verify the current requirements rather than extrapolating from generic pet retail.
- Current pet-source standards: obtain current approved/disapproved breeder criteria and the franchisee certification process.
- Current SKU and pet-selection thresholds: confirm the private-label SKU count, inventory benchmark, and 95% audit method.
- Current POS stack: identify the approved provider, integrations, data fields, upgrade cycle, and software licenses.
- Current web and e-commerce permissions: confirm whether the store may transact online, which Authorized E-Commerce sites apply, lead ownership, and the five-mile delivery rule.
- Current staffing and hours: review minimum store hours, mandatory role training, and manager coverage for the proposed store size.
What is the Petland operating model in one view?
The central mechanism is specialty retail: approved pets, supplies, and services are sold through a staffed store, with digital channels constrained by Petland rules. The franchisee’s core responsibility is day-to-day execution—people, animal care, inventory, customer service, cash controls, and compliance.
The strongest dependency is Petland, Inc.’s control over the Confidential Operating System, supplier eligibility, inventory, POS/data access, marketing standards, and inspections. Physical same-system store placement is protected inside the Territory, but customer solicitation and alternative channels are not exclusive. The main verification question is the current Confidential Operating System, especially staffing, technology, SKU, e-commerce, and pet-source requirements.
