Operating model answer

How does a Pet Wants franchise operate after opening?

Direct answer

A Pet Wants franchise combines a Postal Code-based local market, a required retail store with grooming, proprietary dog and cat food, web and point-of-sale ordering, community events, and home delivery. The franchisee runs local selling and fulfillment; Pet Wants Franchise System, LLC controls the brand, product authorization, core suppliers, technology standards, territory exceptions, and operating procedures.

Data basis: Pet Wants Franchise System, LLC; Franchise Disclosure Document issued April 9, 2026; current Pet Wants Store Franchise offer; FDD Items 1, 6, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19, and 20, the Franchise Agreement, and the Operations Manual table of contents. Item 20 covers calendar years 2023–2025 and reports outlet counts as of December 31. Official U.S. operating pages were checked July 29, 2026. No franchise-controlled public copy of the 2026 FDD was verified, so FDD references below are unlinked.
1 Current offer The 2026 FDD offers the Pet Wants Store Franchise.
12 mo. Store deadline The store and grooming operation must open within 12 months.
158 Franchised outlets Systemwide count at December 31, 2025.
0 Company-owned outlets Item 20 reports none in 2023, 2024, or 2025.
Full-time Required manager An approved, trained individual must personally manage the business.
Format difference

The current offer is not a permanent delivery-only format. A new franchisee may begin with delivery and shipping from a home-based office plus climate-controlled inventory storage, but the Franchise Agreement requires the approved Pet Wants Store, including grooming services, to open within the contractual timetable. The 91 mobile franchises reported at year-end 2025 are legacy units, not the format currently offered.

Offering and demand

What does the unit sell, and who buys it?

The required offering is dog and cat food, pet food delivery, and pet grooming. Pet Wants also authorizes pet supplies, treats, chews, supplements, skin-and-coat products, toys, and other approved merchandise. The franchisee must carry the full line of PET WANTS brand Pet Food and enough inventory to operate at full capacity; Pet Wants may add, remove, require, or make products and services optional.

The customer base is dog and cat owners in the assigned territory. Demand can originate through the retail store, the location website, home delivery, shipping, public events, personal outreach to veterinarians, breeders, groomers, and shelters, or a Pet Wants nutrition consultation. The official consumer site describes online or in-store consultations and location search, while the official franchise site describes stores, grooming, mobile events, and local delivery as connected channels.

Proprietary nutrition

PET WANTS brand dog and cat food is the required anchor product. Franchisees also sell approved treats and pet-care merchandise through the store, events, delivery, and online ordering.

Recurring convenience

Customers can reorder for local delivery or shipping. The franchisor-designated web ordering and payment system connects customer data, inventory, payment, and delivery management.

Store services

The required store includes pet grooming. Nutrition consultations and grooming are separate customer interactions within the authorized offering, while the ordering system supports later customer follow-up and reordering.

Useful official operating references include the Pet Wants business-model page, the official U.S. franchise website, the consumer brand website, the Pet Wants location finder, and the brand’s explanation of nutrition consultations. These pages describe customer-facing activity; the 2026 FDD controls contractual requirements.

Customer cycle

How does work move through a Pet Wants unit?

The operating cycle is local and multi-channel rather than confined to a checkout counter. A lead can begin at a community event, Shared Referral Source, franchise website, store visit, nutrition consultation, or grooming inquiry; it then moves through product or service selection, payment, fulfillment, customer follow-up, and franchise reporting.

Technology requirement

Pet Wants can access business information in the Computer System over the Internet, with no other contractual limit stated on that access. The franchisor can require upgrades or updates, and the FDD states no contractual limit on their frequency or cost. Required functions include ordering, payment, POS, accounting, inventory, deliveries, reporting, and customer data.

Roles and dependencies

Who performs each function, and who controls the operating inputs?

The franchisee must operate through a corporation or limited liability company and appoint one approved individual to manage the franchised business full time. The owner does not have to participate personally in direct operations, but the manager must complete Pet Wants training and sign confidentiality and noncompetition obligations. The FDD does not disclose a required employee count, shift pattern, or labor ratio.

Franchisee and full-time manager

  • Select the final store site, subject to Pet Wants approval.
  • Hire, supervise, schedule, and train local employees.
  • Generate local demand and document advertising activity.
  • Order inventory, manage stock, sell, groom, deliver, and serve customers.
  • Set local prices under the current policy and maintain required records.

Pet Wants Franchise System, LLC

  • Defines the Postal Code territory and approves the Pet Wants Store.
  • Controls System Standards, the Operations Manual, required products, and approved advertising.
  • Designates technology, accesses system data, and may require upgrades.
  • Controls PET WANTS brand product sourcing and Special Account arrangements.
  • Provides website presence, digital materials, training, and discretionary operating support.

Named third-party dependencies

  • The designated manufacturer produces PET WANTS brand dog and cat food.
  • Approved or designated vendors supply hardware, software, insurance, equipment, and branded materials.
  • Internet, warehousing, freight, and delivery providers support ordering and fulfillment.
  • Veterinarians, breeders, groomers, shelters, events, and other Shared Referral Sources can originate demand.

Which suppliers and assets are mandatory?

At the April 9, 2026 issuance date, Pet Wants, acting through its manufacturer, was the only approved supplier for PET WANTS brand dog and cat food. Every Branded Product must be bought from the franchisor, an affiliate, or a designated supplier. Other products, equipment, services, and insurance must meet specifications and come from approved or designated sources; a franchisee may request approval of another supplier when the category permits it.

The operating asset stack includes the approved Pet Wants Store, grooming capability, sufficient PET WANTS brand Pet Food inventory, a standards-compliant delivery vehicle carrying the Marks, climate-controlled storage during the mobile phase, approved signage and uniforms, and the required Computer System. The vehicle serves three functions: delivery, mobile advertising, and product display at approved community events.

Territory and control

Which decisions remain local, and which are restricted?

The exclusive territory is an approved map made from Postal Codes, and exclusivity begins when the franchise opens. The franchisee ordinarily cannot advertise, solicit, sell, deliver, or provide services inside another Pet Wants territory. Work in unassigned areas is permitted, but the franchisee must stop soliciting or accepting new customers there if Pet Wants later grants that area to another franchisee.

Operating decision Franchisee discretion Pet Wants control
Pricing The franchisee currently sets local prices. The franchisor reserves the right to establish price limits later.
Site and staffing Chooses the proposed site and local workforce. Approves the store and the required full-time manager.
Local marketing Selects local media and may create advertisements. Requires local advertising and prior approval of non-system materials.
Products and vendors Chooses among approved options and may request supplier approval. Can mandate products, specifications, designated suppliers, and discontinuation.
Territory exceptions May solicit Shared Referral Sources and choose whether to accept Special Account work. Identifies Shared Referral Sources and negotiates and controls Special Accounts.
Customer recovery Uses best efforts to resolve disputes locally. May issue a refund to protect system goodwill and require reimbursement.
Territory limit

Territorial exclusivity does not cover every channel or account. Pet Wants may process and retain proceeds from direct consumer orders through the National Lead Generation program, then provide the local franchisee with the consumer’s contact information for future service. Pet Wants also controls Special Accounts that cross territory boundaries and can reassign fulfillment if the local franchisee declines or the account requests another provider.

System footprint

What does Item 20 show about the operating network?

Item 20 reports a fully franchised U.S. system for the three-year period shown. End-of-year franchised outlets rose from 146 in 2023 to 159 in 2024, then declined by one to 158 in 2025; company-owned outlets remained at zero. The counts include both Pet Wants Store Franchises and legacy mobile franchises.

0 40 80 120 160 146 159 158 2023 2024 2025 Franchised outlets at December 31

The system added 13 net outlets in 2024, then ended 2025 essentially flat, one outlet below the prior year.

Source: 2026 Pet Wants FDD, Item 20, Table No. 1, page 35. Reconciliation: 146, 159, and 158 franchised outlets plus zero company-owned outlets equal the reported total in each year.

Item 19 adds the format mix at December 31, 2025: 67 store franchises and 91 legacy mobile franchises, totaling the same 158 territories. Because Pet Wants now offers only Store Franchises, a buyer should separate the historical mobile population from the current store-based operating obligation when evaluating peer practices, staffing, inventory, and service mix.

Buyer verification

Which operating questions remain undisclosed?

The FDD identifies functions and controls but does not prescribe a standard headcount, delivery frequency, store hours, grooming capacity, inventory turn target, or unit-level role chart. Local pages demonstrate that delivery schedules and fulfillment rules can vary by location, so those details should be tested against the proposed territory and the current Operations Manual rather than inferred from a single franchise location.

  • Ask which POS, web ordering, CRM, inventory, delivery, and reporting products are currently designated, and obtain the current vendor contracts and data-access terms.
  • Confirm the required grooming scope, qualifications, equipment, booking workflow, and whether local law changes the staffing or facility model.
  • Request current freight cadence, minimum orders, shelf-life controls, storage specifications, stockout procedures, and replacement rules for PET WANTS brand Pet Food.
  • Map the exact Postal Codes, existing Shared Referral Sources, active Special Accounts, unassigned adjacent areas, and National Lead Generation treatment for the proposed market.
  • Verify the full-time manager’s weekly responsibilities, the division between selling, grooming, delivery, events, and administration, and the staffing pattern used by comparable Store Franchises.

Operating-model synthesis

Pet Wants converts local pet-owner demand into authorized product sales, grooming services, delivery, and repeat ordering through a store-centered, territory-based system. The franchisee’s central responsibility is coordinating local demand generation, inventory, staffing, service execution, delivery, and accurate reporting under a full-time approved manager.

The strongest dependencies are Pet Wants control over PET WANTS brand Pet Food sourcing, required products and services, System Standards, technology, data access, and territory exceptions. The main format distinction is the mandatory transition from the initial mobile phase to an approved store with grooming. The largest operating question not answered by the FDD is the practical labor and capacity model required to run retail, grooming, events, delivery, and administration in a specific territory.
