Operating model in one answer

The 2026 British Swim School FDD describes a territory-based swim instruction business delivered through approved Pools rather than one required fixed facility. The franchisee sells an annual membership plus Swim School Subscriptions, manages people and pool execution, while British Swim School Franchising, LLC controls the approved service system, pool approval, core technology, supplier rules, marketing programs, and channel boundaries.

Customer and offering

What does a British Swim School franchisee actually sell?

The core transaction is enrollment in approved swim instruction: customers pay an annual membership fee and purchase a Swim School Subscription to attend private or group lessons at an approved Pool.

The Franchised Business centers on swimming and water-survival instruction: survival skills, stroke development, breathing techniques, and skill coordination. The 2026 FDD also permits approved pool rental, pool parties, open swim, lifeguard training, special events, and select retail products. British Swim School Franchising, LLC can change the authorized catalog; the franchisee may not add unapproved services.

Demand is broad, but the FDD says the target market is primarily parents of children from three months through age 10 and beyond, plus adults. The current official swim-program pages organize the curriculum around Water Acclimation, Water Survival, Stroke Development, Young Adult, Adult, and Dolphin adaptive aquatics. The location finder routes customers to local Pool schedules and availability.

Physical delivery model

How does the franchise operate without one required dedicated pool facility?

A British Swim School Business can deliver lessons through three FDD-defined Pool paths: an Owned Pool, a Rented Pool contracted directly by the franchisee, or a Licensed Pool made available through the franchisor's Pool Program.

Owned Pool

The franchisee or an affiliate owns or leases the pool asset. British Swim School Franchising, LLC still must approve the Pool for use under System Standards.

Rented Pool

The franchisee negotiates with a third-party Pool Owner, such as a hotel or fitness center, and signs a Pool Rental Agreement that requires franchisor consent.

Licensed Pool

The Pool Program uses a facility agreement held by the franchisor or affiliate; the franchisee electing that site signs a Pool Sublicense Agreement.

The FDD's “Outlet” is a market area that may contain more than one Pool. British Swim School's official Pool Partnerships page describes partner-facility operation during allocated pool time. A franchisee can propose additional Pools, but each requires approval and relocation requires prior written consent.

How does a customer move from lead to recurring lesson delivery?

Owner role and staffing

Can the owner step away from daily operations?

The FDD does not describe passive ownership. The British Swim School Business must remain under direct, full-time supervision of the franchisee or a qualifying Designated Manager, while the franchisee remains responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, directing, and supervising unit personnel.

Owner participation

If the franchisee is an entity, the Designated Manager must be a natural-person owner with at least 50% ownership interest and voting power. If the franchisee or Designated Manager will not train and manage swim instructors, an Aquatics Manager must serve as lead swim instructor and train new instructors. The Franchise Agreement also requires a designated marketing manager.

Every swim instructor must complete the then-current British Swim School instructor training before teaching. The franchisee selects personnel, while System Standards govern qualifications, tests, background checks, class sizes, lesson procedures, safety, and customer-service requirements. The franchisor's official support-team page describes operations, aquatics, marketing, and business-coaching resources; the FDD controls contractual support.

Systems and operating control

Which systems, suppliers, and decisions are mandatory?

British Swim School Franchising, LLC controls the operating framework through System Standards, approved Pools, designated technology, supplier approvals, service restrictions, brand marketing rules, and data access; the franchisee controls local employment decisions, day-to-day execution, and the final prices charged to customers.

Computer System
Required components include compatible computer hardware, broadband, VoIP, a multi-function printer, one tablet per opened Pool, required software platforms, and QuickBooks Online.
POS and operating data
The franchisee must use designated core software and payment vendors. The franchisor has contractual rights to access scheduling, customer, price, sales, payroll, and other Computer System data.
BSS Services
BSS Services or another approved affiliate/provider controls required Mailer Program, Digital Advertising Program, SEO, and certain technology inputs described in Items 6 and 8.
Operating Assets
Required signs, inventory, teaching supplies, equipment, and Computer System components must meet specifications and, where designated, come from approved or designated suppliers.
Pricing
The franchisor may suggest or recommend prices, but Item 11 states the franchisee ultimately determines the prices charged to customers.
People
The franchisee hires and manages employees and contractors. British Swim School sets training, safety, qualification, confidentiality, and operating standards they must satisfy.
Technology requirement

The franchisee must maintain connectivity and install franchisor-directed Computer System additions, changes, or modifications within 30 days after notice. The FDD says there is no contractual limit on how often technology updates can be required, and the franchisor is not obligated to maintain the franchisee's hardware.

Territory and channels

What protection does the Territory provide, and what does it not protect?

Subject to compliance, a Standard Territory or Targeted Territory excludes another British Swim School Business physical lesson location inside the defined area, but does not give the franchisee ownership of customers, unrestricted internet rights, or control over customer choice.

FDD term Definition Operating consequence
Standard Territory Up to 25,000 children under age 10, based on third-party demographic data. Eligible for an Area Development Agreement covering 2-3 Franchised Businesses.
Targeted Territory 8,000-20,000 children under age 10, based on third-party demographic data. Single-territory format; no Area Development Agreement.
Pool Protection Radius Franchisor-set radius around an approved Pool. Limits approval of later nearby Pools for other franchisees, but not Grandfathered Pools.

The franchisor and affiliates may advertise or solicit customers in the Territory. Other British Swim School franchisees may not market there, and the franchisee may not market outside the Territory without approval. Customers from another territory may still choose the franchisee's Pool. Internet and other alternative-channel sales are prohibited except through franchisor-designated methods.

Both Territory types have potential for at least two Pool locations. Purchased Zip Codes, when approved, become part of the Territory and enter the Mailer Program population. Pool Program agreements can separately restrict use of certain pools, and a Pool Protection Radius is set at the franchisor's discretion by market conditions rather than by a fixed mileage disclosed in the FDD.

System footprint

What does Item 20 show about the operating network?

Item 20 shows a franchise-only U.S. outlet base across the 2023-2025 reporting period: year-end franchised outlets increased from 194 to 258 to 289, while company-owned outlets remained at zero.

Item 20's outlet series should not be read as a pool-location count: the FDD defines each Outlet as a market area that may contain multiple Pools.

Item 20 signal

The 2025 status table records 47 openings, 14 terminations, one non-renewal, no franchisor reacquisitions, and one cessation for other reasons, ending at 289 franchised outlets. Those counts describe system movement, not individual-unit performance.

Buyer verification

Which operating details should be verified for a specific Territory?

Several high-impact operating dependencies remain territory- or vendor-specific and should be confirmed in current schedules, Pool agreements, and System Standards.

Confirm the exact Standard Territory or Targeted Territory map, demographic count, any Purchased Zip Codes, and whether neighboring Grandfathered Pools affect the practical Pool Protection Radius.
Identify which Owned Pools, Rented Pools, or Licensed Pools are realistically available, who controls lane hours, and which Pool Rental Agreement or Pool Sublicense Agreement will govern each location.
Obtain the current list of designated POS, scheduling, billing, VoIP, payment, chatbot, background-check, insurance, digital-marketing, and other approved suppliers; several vendor names are not fixed in the FDD.
Map the intended Designated Manager, Aquatics Manager, marketing manager, instructor-training coverage, and lifeguard-certified coverage for every operating Pool and lesson block.
Verify current System Standards for class sizes, operating hours, local marketing approvals, Internet and social-media rules, data access, customer records, and any technology upgrade requirements added after the FDD issuance date.
Operating-model synthesis

British Swim School converts local demand into an annual membership and Swim School Subscription, fulfilled by trained instructors at franchisor-approved Pools. The franchisee's core responsibility is direct, full-time local management: securing pool access, staffing lesson blocks, training personnel, scheduling classes, serving customers, and maintaining records.

The strongest dependency is British Swim School Franchising, LLC's control over System Standards, Pool approval, authorized services, core Computer System requirements, supplier approvals, marketing programs, customer-data access, and alternative sales channels. A Standard Territory or Targeted Territory is the protected market area, while each Outlet may contain multiple Owned Pools, Rented Pools, or Licensed Pools. The largest undisclosed operating question is the current vendor-and-Pool stack available in the proposed Territory.
