Opening timeline

How long does it take to open an OpenWorks franchise?

1 day–6+ months
Official post-signing opening range

The 2026 OpenWorks FDD says commencement may occur from one day to six or more months after the Franchise Agreement is signed and the initial franchise fee is paid. This is not an inquiry-to-opening promise. Readiness, FirstWorks® training, formation documents, licenses, insurance, equipment, and account availability control the actual date.

Package selection

Which OpenWorks opening path applies to the package you select?

OpenWorks uses one Janitorial Franchise Agreement, but the package changes the initial monthly account volume, territory definition, equipment-kit treatment and post-readiness fulfillment period. The FDD does not disclose a Development Agreement, Area Development Agreement or multi-unit opening schedule. Buying additional account volume later is an amendment to the existing franchise, not another franchise unit.

Package path Initial account volume Contract territory Opening-process difference
OW P $0 Continental United States No promised initial account volume or equipment kit; hands-on training may be waived in OpenWorks’ sole discretion.
OW GrOW $0 Continental United States No promised initial account volume or fulfillment period; initial kit is disclosed as included.
OW 7 $7,000 monthly Usually 60-mile radius 240-day account-volume fulfillment period after prerequisites.
OW 10 $10,000 monthly Usually 60-mile radius 330-day account-volume fulfillment period after prerequisites.
OW 25 or higher $25,000+ monthly Usually 60-mile radius 780 days at OW 25; each extra $5,000 adds 150 days.
Site approval is not territory protection

The franchise is designed for home-based operation, and OpenWorks has neither an obligation to find a site nor a right to approve an outside office if it remains within the territory. The territory is non-exclusive. The current official OpenWorks franchise page uses “borderless territory” growth language, but the 2026 Franchise Agreement defines a 60-mile radius for most packages and requires written permission to service outside it. Verify the completed Franchise Summary before signing.

Applicant qualification

What must an OpenWorks applicant qualify for before signing?

The 2026 FDD does not publish a minimum net worth, liquid-capital amount, credit score, education level or required cleaning experience. The official franchise page says prior cleaning experience is unnecessary, but meeting that marketing description does not guarantee acceptance. OpenWorks conducts a background and credit check on every owner or member before the Franchise Agreement and charges up to $80 per person.

✓The signing franchisee is documented as a corporation or limited liability company.
✓Every owner or member completes the Background Check Release and Authorization.
✓A Designated Manager is identified for full-time, day-to-day management.
✓At least one principal and the Designated Manager are fluent in English.
✓At least one principal, involved principals and the Designated Manager can complete FirstWorks.
✓Each 5% or greater owner signs the required guaranty and confidentiality documents; applicable spouse documents also apply.
✓The operator can hire and supervise employees; subcontractors and independent-contractor cleaners are prohibited.
✓Before accepting an account, the franchisee can certify resources for supplies, equipment and 90 days of payroll.

OpenWorks’ official application description lists an initial phone consultation, virtual meetings and review of disclosure materials. It does not publish a binding approval rubric. Ask which candidate criteria are mandatory, which are preferences, who issues approval, and whether approval is contingent on a package or market.

Verified sequence

What happens from initial inquiry to the first service account?

The opening sequence is driven by disclosure, contract, formation, training and account-readiness dependencies—not by a retail-site buildout. OpenWorks assistance does not replace the applicant’s responsibility for entity formation, licenses, insurance, technology, employees or local compliance.

Training and readiness

What must be completed before OpenWorks can treat the business as ready?

Training completion is necessary but not sufficient. The Franchise Agreement says the franchisee may not operate until OpenWorks certifies in writing that the franchisee and Designated Manager satisfactorily completed initial training. The fulfillment clock starts only after required individuals complete training, equipment is picked up, the business license and requested entity documents or registrations are delivered, and the initial fee is paid, subject to state addenda.

Within 60 days
Complete FirstWorks after signing. The current schedule totals 15 classroom hours, 5 self-study hours and 20 on-the-job hours.
Within 10 days
Deliver each insurance certificate after a required policy is issued or renewed.
Before service
Execute the Account Acceptance or Account Assignment Agreement and the applicable Scope of Work.
Before staffing
Train employees, use employees rather than subcontractors, and maintain enough personnel for the accepted account.

The Technology System must include an email account, current computer, smartphone with voice/SMS/data and enabled location services when required, plus adequate internet access. OpenWorks supplies approved equipment and supplier lists; an initial kit is provided for packages other than OW P after training and licensing conditions are met. The franchisee—not OpenWorks—configures, maintains and upgrades the technology.

The insurance baseline includes at least $2 million in comprehensive public liability coverage, $1 million in hired and non-hired auto liability, workers’ compensation of at least $1 million and the legal minimum, property coverage at replacement value, and business interruption coverage sufficient for six months of obligations to OpenWorks. Required policies must meet the contract’s carrier, additional-insured and cancellation-notice conditions.

Licenses and permits vary by activity and location. The Franchise Agreement requires all licenses, permits, bonds and government deposits to remain current, but it does not create one nationwide permit checklist. Use the SBA licenses and permits guide to identify the relevant state, county and city authorities. For chemical handling and employee training, verify the applicable OSHA Hazard Communication requirements.

Training requirement

The official website describes training as primarily online and self-paced through OpenWorks Franchise University. The 2026 contract controls: FirstWorks is offered once per month, must be completed within 60 days, and can include virtual, in-person, self-study and required on-site hands-on components.

Account fulfillment

How long can OpenWorks take to provide the contracted initial account volume?

The fulfillment period is not the opening timeline. It begins only after the contractual readiness conditions are complete. A franchisee may start after accepting the first account while OpenWorks continues offering accounts until the package’s cumulative initial monthly account volume is reached.

Initial account-volume fulfillment periods

Days measured from completion of the same readiness trigger; OW P and OW GrOW have no initial-volume period.

Interpretation: package size materially changes the period for reaching full initial account volume, even though operations may commence earlier. Source: 2026 OpenWorks FDD, Item 11 p. 24; Franchise Agreement §5.2.1 pp. 7–8.

A franchisee may refuse up to two initial accounts, but each refusal—including failure to respond within OpenWorks’ stated response window—adds 30 days to the fulfillment period. A default can suspend fulfillment; required retraining can cancel the prior period and start a new one. If OpenWorks does not offer the full volume, a written partial-refund request must be made within 30 days after the period ends or the refund right is waived.

Contractual deadline

Calendar the 30-day refund-request window separately from the 240-, 330- or 780-day fulfillment period. Missing the request deadline does not erase OpenWorks’ remaining account-volume obligation, but it waives the contractual partial-refund election described in Item 5 and Franchise Agreement §5.2.1.

Responsibility map

Who controls the dependencies that can delay opening?

The applicant controls most readiness work; OpenWorks controls training satisfaction, written certification and account offers; third parties control licensing, insurance issuance, staffing availability and customer access. Franchisor assistance is not a guarantee that any third party will act by a particular date.

Applicant / franchisee

Submit complete ownership and background-check information.
Form the entity and appoint the Designated Manager.
Obtain licenses, insurance, technology, uniforms and employees.
Complete training and respond promptly to account offers.

OpenWorks

Provide the FDD and proposed agreements.
Conduct FirstWorks and determine satisfactory completion.
Provide the Manual, approved supplier lists and applicable kit.
Offer accounts within the package fulfillment period.

Third parties

Government agencies issue business licenses and registrations.
Insurers issue compliant policies and certificates.
Suppliers provide approved equipment, chemicals and uniforms.
Customers provide the site-specific Scope of Work and access conditions.

Alternative entry paths

What changes for a resale or an existing cleaning business?

A resale is governed by the transfer provisions, not the new-franchise account-fulfillment sequence. The seller submits the proposed buyer’s application and transfer terms. OpenWorks generally has 30 days after receiving the notice—or later-requested information—to consent or explain refusal. The transferee must be a legal entity, meet OpenWorks’ then-current standards, receive the current FDD at least 14 calendar days before closing, sign the then-current Franchise Agreement and complete any required training.

A candidate who already owns a commercial janitorial or facility-services business must list pre-existing accounts in Attachment 2. After entering the agreement, the operator must stop soliciting commercial janitorial business except as an OpenWorks franchisee. This is not disclosed as a separate conversion franchise with its own conversion agreement.

Buyer verification

What should a buyer verify before signing and before the first account?

✓The exact package, initial account volume, territory address and fulfillment days appear in the Franchise Summary.
✓The state addendum does not change payment timing, dispute terms, guaranties or termination rights.
✓Every owner, principal, spouse and trainee knows which guaranty or confidentiality document must be signed.
✓The FirstWorks date permits completion inside 60 days, including any required on-site travel.
✓Insurance limits, endorsements, carrier rating and certificate delivery are accepted by OpenWorks.
✓The local business license, employer registrations and worker-safety obligations are identified.
✓The equipment kit, excluded OW P items, approved suppliers and technology specifications are documented.
✓The first Account Assignment Agreement and Scope of Work match staffing, payroll and service capacity.
✓Current and former franchisees confirm actual training scheduling, account-offer response windows and opening bottlenecks.
✓The 30-day refund-election deadline and the effect of refusals, defaults and retraining are calendared.
Synthesis

What is the verified OpenWorks opening path?

The verified path is inquiry and screening, FDD delivery and federal review, package and entity confirmation, execution of the Franchise Agreement and attachments, formation and compliance work, FirstWorks completion, written training certification, readiness-document delivery, and signed acceptance of the first service account.

The only disclosed total is an official one-day-to-six-or-more-month post-signing range, not a guaranteed inquiry-to-opening schedule. The most important applicant-controlled dependency is completing formation, licensing, insurance, staffing and training within the contract’s readiness rules. The most important franchisor or third-party dependency is account availability after OpenWorks certification. The key issues to verify are the completed territory language, state-specific fee timing, the 60-day training deadline and the package-specific fulfillment/refund calendar.
