Operating model

How does a Sylvan Learning Center operate after opening?

Direct answer

Under the 2026 Sylvan Learning, LLC FDD, the franchisee runs a supervised learning Center that converts family, school, employer-benefit, and approved digital inquiries into assessments, memberships or program enrollments, scheduled instruction, payment, and recurring reporting. Sylvan controls the authorized programs, operating standards, technology stack, supplier rules, customer data, marketing boundaries, and quality review.

Offering and formats

What does the franchisee sell, and where can instruction occur?

The authorized business centers on assessment and individualized educational programs for children, principally reading, mathematics, writing and test preparation. The System also includes SylvanSync, Sylvan Edge programs in robotics, coding, engineering and mathematics, and ACE IT! programs funded by school districts, government entities or nonprofit organizations. The consumer journey described on the official How Sylvan Works page begins with an Insight Assessment and a personalized learning plan.

Retail and membership

Primary Center and Additional Center

The Primary Center is the approved retail location. With prior written approval, a franchisee may add an Additional Center inside the Protected Area. Each Additional Center follows the Franchise Agreement, requires separate books and revenue reports, and may offer all or only part of the System as Sylvan approves.

Temporary and remote

Satellite and approved live online delivery

A Satellite is an approved temporary location, such as a school or community center. Live online delivery may be permitted through approved platforms inside the Protected Area. These channels are not automatic: Sylvan can set eligibility, location, program, training and technology conditions. The consumer site separately explains live online tutoring.

Channel distinction

mySylvan Marketplace+ is not automatically part of the Franchised Business. The 2026 FDD describes a separate pilot agreement under which Sylvan or its affiliate controls the Marketplace Platform, Tutor access, Consumer data, scheduling and payment. Sylvan may operate that channel inside a Protected Area without compensation to the franchisee; participation requires separate approval.

Bright Horizons workflow

New franchisees are required to participate in the Bright Horizons program. A Customer requests a Reservation through the benefits portal; the selected Center receives details by email, enters the Customer in Hub, creates a Customer 360 task and contacts the Customer within 24 hours. Services must occur at the Center or an approved Satellite, attendance must be recorded in Hub, and Sylvan invoices Bright Horizons before remitting collected funds to the Center.

Roles and control

Who performs each operating function?

Sylvan does not permit absentee ownership. At least one Owner must participate in oversight, decisions and strategic direction and remain regularly engaged. A Designated Manager must hold full-time responsibility for daily supervision; if that manager is not an Owner, an Owner must still be actively involved in daily operations. The franchisee, not Sylvan, makes employment decisions.

Franchisee and unit team

  • Hire, compensate, schedule, discipline and discharge Center personnel.
  • Maintain a full-time primary Center Director and required certifications.
  • Operate the Approved Location, maintain equipment and secure licenses.
  • Perform local marketing, enrollment, instruction, bookkeeping and reporting.

Sylvan Learning, LLC

  • Defines authorized programs, Membership Program standards and the Manual.
  • Prescribes Sylvan Software, POS, reporting access and technology upgrades.
  • Approves suppliers, marketing materials, sites, Satellites and online delivery.
  • Conducts inspections, audits, training and systemwide marketing administration.

Third-party dependencies

  • Designated Suppliers provide technology, merchant processing and operating inputs.
  • The Call Center handles required support, promotion, booking and event selling.
  • Bright Horizons supplies employer-benefit reservations and pays through Sylvan.
  • Schools and institutions may contract for ACE IT! delivery at approved locations.

Systems and restrictions

Which operating choices are controlled, and which remain local?

The franchisee controls the employer relationship and ordinary execution inside the unit, but Sylvan controls most system architecture. Sylvan may change required programs, equipment, software, reports, pricing policies, promotions and operating procedures through the Manual or written directives. The franchisee must implement the changes and fund required updates.

Franchisor controls
Authorized products and services, mandatory programs, membership terms, brand standards, required operating hours, approved marketing, suppliers, technology, data access, inspections and audit protocols.
Franchisee decides
Hiring, firing, compensation, benefits, work schedules, local vendor selection where no Designated Supplier exists, and local prices only when Sylvan has not imposed lawful pricing requirements.
Technology dependency
Sylvan Software includes front-desk management, POS, online enrollment, automated email marketing and customer management. Sylvan may remotely access system data without contractual limitation and can require upgrades.
Supplier dependency
Sylvan or a Designated Supplier may be mandatory for operating inputs including POS, merchant processing, digital marketing, uniforms, inventory, forms, insurance, accounting services and technology solutions.
Territory limit
The Protected Area is not an exclusive territory. Sylvan generally restricts another Sylvan Learning business inside it, subject to reserved rights, but retains internet, alternative-channel, affiliate-brand and Marketplace rights.
Technology requirement

The FDD contains an equipment inconsistency that requires clarification. Item 7, Note 11 states a minimum of ten Apple iPads per Center unless approved otherwise, while Item 11, page 32 states twelve. The current Manual, Start-Up Equipment and Inventory Package, and any 2026 Command Center deployment requirements should be reconciled before relying on either count.

Sources: 2026 FDD Items 7, 8, 11, 12 and 16, pages 18-25, 27-39 and 49-50; Franchise Agreement §§7, 10, 11 and 15. The official franchise site describes SylvanSync and owner technology at the education-franchise overview.

System footprint

What does Item 20 show about the operating network?

Item 20 reports an entirely franchised U.S. outlet base at December 31, 2025. Corporate outlets fell from five at the end of 2023 to zero at the end of 2024, while franchised outlets rose to 476 and then fell to 433 during 2025.

U.S. outlet composition at year-end

Franchised and company-owned outlets, 2023-2025

0 100 200 300 400 500 478 total 2023 473 + 5 476 total 2024 476 + 0 433 total 2025 433 + 0
Franchised outlets Company-owned outlets

Interpretation: The 2025 total was 43 outlets below 2024. Item 20 separately reports 12 openings, 10 terminations and 45 outlets that ceased operations for other reasons during 2025; those categories should not be converted into a profitability conclusion.

Source: Sylvan Learning, LLC 2026 FDD, Item 20, Tables 1, 3 and 4, pages 65 and 73-74. Reconciliation: 473 + 5 = 478; 476 + 0 = 476; 433 + 0 = 433.

Buyer verification

Which operating details should be verified before signing?

  • Mandatory program set: obtain the current Manual provisions identifying which SylvanSync, Membership Program, Bright Horizons, Sylvan Edge and ACE IT! offerings are mandatory for the proposed Center.
  • Technology configuration: confirm the current Hub or Command Center rollout, POS hardware, CRM, Dashboard Access, accounting integration, data-access rights and the actual iPad minimum.
  • Territory and channels: map the Protected Area, existing Centers, approved Satellite rules, online-delivery rights, Marketplace activity and affiliate-brand reservations.
  • Staff qualifications: verify state licensing, Center Director, Director of Education, assessment proctor and SylvanSync instructor requirements for the exact jurisdiction and programs.
  • Supplier schedule: obtain the current Designated Supplier list, sole-source items, mandatory participation agreements, pass-through charges and replacement requirements.

Operating synthesis

What is the practical operating model?

Sylvan Learning Center revenue comes from authorized assessment, tutoring, membership, enrichment and intervention programs delivered through approved personnel, curriculum, locations and technology. The franchisee’s core responsibility is active management of enrollment, staffing, service quality, compliance and reporting. Sylvan’s strongest control is the Manual-driven program, technology, supplier and Customer Data architecture. Satellites, live online delivery, Bright Horizons and mySylvan Marketplace+ follow different rules. The largest unresolved question is the current integrated technology specification, including the conflicting iPad minimum.
