How long does it take to open a Best Brains franchise?
Best Brains discloses a typical eight-to-twelve-week period from signing the Franchise Agreement to starting the learning center. That is an estimate, not a promise. The signed agreement separately requires operation to begin within 180 days, and opening still depends on approved premises, buildout, permits, training completion, insurance evidence, required systems, an approved launch plan, and Best Brains' prior written approval.
The public Best Brains franchise site starts the process with an inquiry. Its franchise inquiry form asks for contact details, teacher and military status, and the proposed city, state and ZIP code; qualifying inquiries are contacted for an interview. The 2026 FDD does not publish a minimum net worth, liquid-capital threshold, credit score, application fee or application-approval deadline.
The federal presale step is separate from brand qualification. The FTC Franchise Rule requires the disclosure document at least 14 calendar days before a prospect signs a binding agreement with, or pays, the franchisor or an affiliate. The FTC explains that the count starts the day after delivery and signing or payment may occur on day fifteen; see the FTC Franchise Rule Compliance Guide. This is a disclosure-review period, not the full Best Brains approval or opening timeline.
Who can qualify for the Premium and Teacher Learning Center formats?
Premium Learning Center applicants do not have a disclosed teacher-license requirement. A Teacher Learning Center must be owned by a person who holds a teaching certificate from the United States or Canada. Both formats require the franchisee to participate personally, supervise the center on premises, and operate through a limited liability company or corporation rather than a partnership. Meeting those disclosed conditions does not guarantee award or site availability.

What must happen from inquiry to written opening approval?
Submit the inquiry and identify a market
Action: Provide contact information, teacher or veteran status, and the proposed city, state and ZIP code.
Actor: Applicant.
Next dependency: Best Brains contacts qualifying inquiries for an interview; no response deadline is disclosed.
Complete qualification and select the format
Action: Establish whether the proposal is Premium or Teacher and whether the owner-role and credential rules can be met.
Actor: Applicant and Best Brains.
Blocker: Teacher status is mandatory for the Teacher format; unpublished award criteria remain discretionary.
Receive and review the FDD and agreements
Action: Review the FDD, Franchise Agreement, Lease Rider, ACH form, inventory agreement, state addenda and any financing documents.
Timing: At least 14 calendar days before signing or paying Best Brains or an affiliate.
Blocker: State registration or amendment requirements may affect when an offer can proceed.
Sign the controlling documents
Action: Execute the one-unit Franchise Agreement and ACH authorization; pay signing-triggered fees. Teacher financing requires the applicable Promissory Note.
Actor: Approved franchisee and Best Brains.
Next dependency: The agreement date starts the 180-day opening deadline.
Finalize written site and lease approval
Action: Finalize the premises, provide site information, and submit the proposed lease at least 15 days before execution. Preliminary site work may occur earlier.
Actor: Franchisee finds the site; Best Brains approves the site and lease in writing.
Blocker: Do not sign an unapproved lease; the Lease Rider terms must be included.
Complete design, buildout and regulated setup
Action: Submit survey and plan changes; obtain zoning, permits and licenses; build to approved plans; secure lien waivers; install approved furniture, signs and systems.
Actor: Franchisee, architect, contractor, landlord and government authorities.
Blocker: Local school or after-school rules, construction and inspections vary by jurisdiction.
Attend and pass initial training
Action: The owner and one employee attend 14 days in the Chicagoland area and pass to Best Brains' satisfaction.
Timing: Expected about one to ten weeks after signing, in the weeks before opening.
Blocker: Failure to pass permits termination without return of the franchise fee or reimbursement of opening costs.
Prove readiness and obtain written opening approval
Action: Provide insurance evidence, stock approved inventory, implement accounting and technology systems, complete staffing, and execute the approved grand-opening plan.
Actor: Franchisee completes readiness; Best Brains supplies approximately three days of opening assistance.
Blocker: The center may not open without Best Brains' prior written approval.

Which disclosed periods control the critical path?
All values are shown in days; each row keeps its own contractual or process trigger.
Interpretation: the eight-to-twelve-week range is the disclosed typical duration, while 180 days is the contract's termination-triggering outer limit. Site, lease, Option Agreement and opening periods have different starting events and should not be added together.
Source: 2026 FDD, Item 5, p. 4; Item 11, pp. 16-21; Item 12, pp. 21-22; Franchise Agreement §§5.B-5.C; Option Agreement §§1-2.
Item 11 and Franchise Agreement Sections 5.B and 7.B state a 180-day opening deadline. The Item 17 summary instead says failure to commence within 90 days is a non-curable default. The attached Franchise Agreement is internally consistent at 180 days and governs the relationship, but the discrepancy should be raised in writing and clarified before execution rather than silently assumed away.
What does site approval require, and what does it not provide?
The franchisee finds and secures the premises; Best Brains reviews the location and lease. The FDD says Best Brains uses reasonable best efforts to issue written approval or disapproval within 30 days after complete location-evaluation or lease information is available. It recommends 1,000 to 1,500 square feet and may consider demographics, traffic, access, parking, visibility, signage, competition, neighboring uses, rent and physical characteristics.
Lease approval is a separate gate. The proposed lease must reach Best Brains at least 15 days before scheduled execution, cannot be signed first, and must include the Lease Rider's inspection, default-notice and lease-assumption rights. After possession, the franchisee must submit site and plan information, obtain zoning changes, permits and licenses, build to approved specifications, obtain contractor lien waivers and install approved furniture, equipment, signage and opening inventory.
The Franchise Agreement grants a non-exclusive right to operate one center at an approved site. Best Brains may operate or franchise other centers and use alternate channels without paying compensation for activity near the location. Written site or lease approval therefore does not create a protected territory, guarantee the lease economics, or predict success.

Who controls each opening dependency?
The franchisor's assistance is not a guarantee that a site, lease, permit, contractor, teacher, employee or opening date will be available. Source: 2026 FDD, Items 1, 8, 9 and 11; Franchise Agreement §§4-5.
What must be completed before Best Brains can authorize opening?
The owner must attend and pass initial training before operating. Best Brains discloses 14 days of training in the Chicagoland area for the franchisee and one employee, expected roughly one to ten weeks after signing. The curriculum table totals 34 classroom hours and 10 on-the-job hours across center development, human resources, marketing, financial, administrative and technical subjects. Scheduling is flexible rather than fixed.
| Readiness gate | Required evidence or action | Who must clear it |
|---|---|---|
| Training | Owner passes; managers and assistants complete manual-required training and certification. | Franchisee / Best Brains |
| Insurance | Coverage and premium evidence furnished before opening; Best Brains named additional insured. | Franchisee / insurer |
| Premises | Approved plans, completed buildout, installed signage and required permits or licenses. | Franchisee / third parties |
| Systems | High-speed internet, specified computer software, BEA Portal access, accounting and inventory controls. | Franchisee / suppliers |
| Staffing | Certified teachers for Math and English; confidentiality and non-competition forms for personnel. | Franchisee |
| Launch | Approved grand-opening marketing plan, required inventory and prior written approval to open. | Franchisee / Best Brains |
The FDD also requires at least $14,000 of local grand-opening advertising under a Best Brains-approved plan and a $3,500 Grand Opening Representative Fee before opening. These amounts are included here only because payment and completion are opening gates. Materials, furniture, signs, hardware, software and suppliers must meet Best Brains specifications; alternate suppliers require advance written review and may take up to 30 days after complete information is received.

Is there a multi-unit or development agreement?
The disclosed standard path is one Franchise Agreement for one approved location. The 2026 FDD does not disclose an Area Development Agreement or mandatory multi-unit development schedule. A current franchisee may, if Best Brains believes the franchisee has sufficient time, energy, management ability and capital, be offered an Option Agreement for a possible additional center.
The Option Agreement gives 90 days to secure a lease and obtain a new Franchise Agreement within an agreed Search Area. The $2,500 payment is credited to the new franchise fee if both are obtained within the period; otherwise it is nonrefundable. Best Brains may cancel for a prospect it considers qualified and refund the payment. The option is therefore a conditional search right for an existing franchisee, not an exclusive territory or development commitment.

What should a prospective franchisee verify before signing?
The 2026 FDD listed 201 franchised U.S. outlets at year-end 2025, four signed-but-not-open outlets as of December 31, 2025, and no confidentiality clauses during the prior three fiscal years that restricted current or former franchisees from speaking openly. Those contacts are the strongest disclosed source for verifying how the written process works in practice. The public Best Brains U.S. brand site can also be used to compare current programs and operating claims with the services the center is required to offer.

What is the verified Best Brains opening path?
The verified path is inquiry and interview, format qualification, federal and state disclosure review, Franchise Agreement execution, approved site and lease, compliant buildout and permits, passed training, staffing and system readiness, approved launch marketing, and prior written opening approval. The disclosed total is an official typical eight-to-twelve-week period after signing, not a guarantee.
The most important applicant-controlled dependency is securing an approvable lease and completing the regulated buildout, staffing and training within the contract window. The most important franchisor or third-party dependency is timely written site, lease and opening approval alongside landlord, contractor and government actions. The key contractual issue to resolve before signing is the FDD's 180-day versus 90-day opening-deadline inconsistency.
